Shuggie Otis

If you've never heard of Shuggie Otis then I'm not even going to try explain what a complete legend he is; rather, I'm just going to encourage you to go out and buy one of his records (my favorite is Inspiration Information but you kind of can't go wrong). Seriously. Do it. Needless to say, it was humbling to have the opportunity to photograph him at Lincoln Hall last week. He is incredible. For more photos, click here

Lucky me was in Siesta Key, Florida a couple weekends ago for a gorgeous wedding (congrats Chelsea and AJ!). Here are a few photos from the wonderful trip. Enjoy!

Jamie Lidell and Empress Of

Jamie Lidell brought his brand of electronic soul and funk to Lincoln Hall earlier in the month. For those of you who are familiar with Lidell, it will come as no surprise to learn that his live performance is better than ever. The crowd danced and sang along with Lidell as he stood behind what appeared to be a magical, musical spaceship and put on his one-man show of cool visuals, beautiful lighting, and solid tunes. Go see him live, people! He is awesome. Brooklyn newcomer Empress Of opened the evening with her hazy electropop. Keep an eye out for her this year.

Doldrums and Sean Nicholas Savage

Last Thursday I hopped over to Schubas to photograph Doldrums and Sean Nicholas Savage. Rather than try to explain Doldrums' sound myself, I'll just steal this excellent and accurate explanation from No Pain In Pop: it's "a sea of chopped up samples, disembodied vocals and tribal percussion. Electro-hallucinogenic freak outs and fuzzy warm nostalgia." Exactly. And they put on a fun show. Sean Nicholas Savage warmed the audience up with a mixture of poetry, humor, and pretty pop songs about love and heartbreak. For more photos, head over to Schubas' tumblr here

Sky Ferreira and How to Dress Well

Last Friday Sky Ferreira and How To Dress Well played for a sold out crowd at Schubas. The High Highs opened (and if you haven't seen my photos of them from TNK, check them out here). How To Dress Well (stagename of Tom Krell) was my personal highlight of the night. First of all, his voice is sexy. Like, the move-over-Justin-Timberlake-because-Tom-Krell-is-bringin-sexy-back kind of sexy. But don't get me wrong - he's not a pop star. His silky smooth, ambient R & B songs are also home to deep, dark, and sometimes haunting lyrics. During HTWD's set at Schubas, I occasionally glanced at the crowd, each time witnessing a sea of people swooning, myself included. Sky Ferreira is a rising young musician and actress. If you haven't heard of her yet, expect to be hearing of her soon. Only 20, she has a beautiful voice and strong songwriting skills. Live she has a relatively shy, yet endearing, presence. I'm looking forward to seeing her continue to develop her voice and her sound. For more of my photos click here.
